	Wood Colonial Capital Installation Instructions Ornamental capitals are artfully crafted from a number of materials, including marble/polyester resin and composition (plaster and fibers). All designs are made with appropriate proportions for the various styles of architecture and column sizes. When fluted columns are purchased for use with ornamental capitals, Turncraft will flute for your specific opening height if provided. PIease note that our fluting will be based on trimming the shaft as shown: Turncraft recommends trimming column shafts at the top of the neck ring for Roman Corinthian and Temple of Winds caps, and at the top of the fillet (below the neck ring) for all other capitals. NOTE: With certain shorter capitals, this may reduce the overall height of the column. PIease be certain trimming will not make the column too short for your specific installation.* Composition capitals are NOT Ioad bearing . Composition capitals are supplied with a load bearing plug. (PIugs may be shipped separately.) Use the wooden plug when installing. The plug bears the weight of the structure -- not the capitaI. Insert the smaller diameter end of the plug in the top of the column. Secure with rustproof fasteners. If necessary, trim the upper portion of the plug so that it is 1/8" taller than the capitaI. The supported structure will rest on the pIug rather than the capital (below). Composition capitals are factory coated with a clear acrylic vinyl weather proofing. Before installation, appIy at Ieast two coats of OIL BASE paint to the inside and out- side of the capitaI. If they are allowed to become wet before these coats of paint have been applied, they will peel and the capitaIs will resist further attempts to paint and will deteriorate. General lnstallation lnformation Each capital order is shipped with installation instructions specific to the material from which it is made. With all exterior column installations, there must be ventilation at the top of the column. Vent column assembly into vented soffit, or drill small vent holes near the neck of the column, but positioned away from exposure to rain. FIashing and/or caulking must be applied to protect shaft from water leaking inside. Rustproof, countersunk screws should be used and sealed with a waterproof compound. Reassembly of Split OrnamentaI Capitals If the capital halves are not numbered upon arrivaI, number corresponding halves to keep from mismatching parts. If they are already numbered, be sure to match corresponding numbers that are on each capital half. On COMPOSITION CAPITALS you must first shellac both cut faces of the capital to seal the surface. Take half of the capitaI and center it on the column. Secure it to the wooden pIug (or shaft) by drilling holes through the capital and installing rustproof screws through the capital and into the plug. These screws must be countersunk and sealed. Once half the capitaI has been secured, apply construction adhesive ("Liquid Nails" or similar) to the secured capital half. Squeeze the other half into place and secure using the same procedure as for the first half.
