Poly-Classic column fluting is held up from the bottom of the shaft for a few inches to allow field trimming of the shaft for less than nominal opening heights. The following table shows that distance, assisting in choosing between Tuscan or Attic bases, or differing heights of ornamental caps.
Tapered column shafts generally have a straight portion at the bottom before the taper begins. At the point of the taper, the space between the shaft and the base begins to increase as the column is cut shorter. While that space can be easily filled and caulked, the information in this table will help determine how much of the shaft is straight and where the taper starts.
The measurements for Inside Round and Inside Square are helpful in determining the largest size of support device that can be used inside the column. The primary basis for these figures is the approximate inside top diameter (narrowest part of the shaft.)
